I just read about an interesting new
field guide for the US Virgin Islands that appears to have made a significant improvement to the conventional field guide concept. Rather than trying to capture a 'representative sample' of the lush (and widely varying) Caribbean flora and fauna, the two authors from the University of the Virgin Islands have instead used the most ecologically appropriate unit of area - an island - to define the limits of the ecosystem described in the guide. This concept could be used in many other regions both tropical and temperate to better highlight the links between terrestrial and marine ecosystems. I would love to see this concept applied to the islands of my home
bioregion in the
Georgia Basin.
